Rose of Tralee: The Extravaganza

That’s right the Irish institution that is the Rose of Tralee is coming to Edinburgh’s favourite Irish pub, Biddy Mulligans!
This August 20th and 21st marvel as the 59th pageant unfolds live. Watch as the lovely ladies from across the country and counties compete for the upmost of prizes a Tiara and a Kia!
For all those Irish out there here’s a refresher and for anyone wondering what the heck is going on continue reading;

Where is Tralee?

Tralee is a lovely wee town in county Kerry on the South-West coast of Ireland, if you haven’t been you should really treat the family to a few days away, sure they’ll love that!
But more now the next best thing is right here in the Grassmarket!

Is it a beauty pageant then?

That depends who you ask! The official line is that the event is a celebration of women; however the women being celebrated are classically ‘good-looking’.
Having said that the winner isn’t just the prettiest girl in a sash, she must display talent, intellect, aspiration, ambitions and of course their connection to their Irish roots.

Does it have a charming host?

That’s Daithí Ó Sé- sorry what now? It’s pronounced … well were not really sure if we’re honest!
More importantly he’s ben hosting the pageant since 2010 and is well loved for his Irish craic.

Is it all women?

All the official competitors are women but don’t fear there’s plenty of testosterone around in the form of the escorts. These dapper chaps accompany the ladies over the course of the week to make sure they are never un-chaperoned- what a tragedy that would be.

How do I watch?

You book a table right here at Biddy Mulligans obviously! We will have the prosecco popping and have the sashes at the ready to bring a slice of Tralee to Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.
